In recent years, the UK has seen a surge in interest in wellness practices that go beyond traditional fitness or talk therapy. From cold water swimming in Cornwall to mindfulness retreats in the Lake District, many of us are seeking new ways to connect more deeply with our minds and bodies. One powerful and lesser-known approach making waves in the wellness world is somatic Padwork.

But what exactly is it, and why is it worth your attention?

What Is Somatic Padwork?

Somatic padwork is a therapeutic practice that combines elements of boxing padwork with somatic (body-based) therapy techniques. Unlike conventional boxing training, which focuses on sport or competition, somatic padwork is used as a tool for emotional release, trauma healing, stress reduction, and nervous system regulation.

A typical session involves a trained practitioner holding focus pads while guiding you through a series of punches, breathing patterns, body awareness exercises, and reflective moments. It’s not about aggression—it’s about reconnecting with your body in a safe, grounded, and supported way.

Why Is It Called “Somatic”?

“Somatic” comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body.” Somatic therapies are rooted in the idea that our bodies hold emotions, memories, and trauma—not just our minds. Somatic padwork helps unlock and release those emotions by tapping into your body’s natural rhythms and responses through physical movement.

The Benefits of Somatic Padwork

1. Stress Relief and Emotional Regulation

Hitting pads in a structured, mindful setting provides a safe outlet for built-up tension and stress. Combined with breathing techniques and present-moment awareness, the process helps calm the nervous system and regulate emotional responses.

2. Trauma Release

Many people carry unprocessed trauma in their bodies. Through intentional movement and the support of a practitioner, somatic padwork can help release stuck emotions and gently bring the body back into a state of safety and balance.

3. Improved Body Awareness

You don’t need to be athletic to benefit. The practice enhances your awareness of posture, breathing, tension, and movement, helping you build a more conscious relationship with your body.

4. Empowerment and Confidence

There’s something deeply empowering about reclaiming space, using your voice, and standing strong in your body. Many people leave sessions feeling more confident, assertive, and connected to their personal power.

5. Support for Anxiety and Burnout

With rising rates of anxiety, burnout, and nervous system overload in the UK—especially since the pandemic—somatic padwork offers a restorative approach that supports long-term mental and emotional health.

Who Is It For?

Somatic padwork is suitable for a wide range of people, including:

  • Those dealing with stress, anxiety, or burnout

  • People recovering from trauma

  • Individuals who struggle to express anger or set boundaries

  • Anyone curious about alternative mind-body healing approaches

It's especially beneficial for people who find traditional talk therapy challenging or incomplete and are looking for a more embodied, physical way to heal and grow.

Finding Somatic Padwork in the UK

Though still a niche practice, somatic padwork is slowly growing across the UK. Some practitioners operate out of holistic wellness studios, while others offer private sessions in person or online. Look for facilitators with training in both trauma-informed practice and padwork or martial arts to ensure a safe and effective experience. I am fortunate that I have been a counsellor / therapist for 13 years and have 35 years experience in Martial arts.

Final Thoughts

In a world where many of us live in our heads, somatic padwork invites us back into our bodies—offering not just movement, but meaningful transformation. Whether you’re looking to manage stress, process emotion, or simply feel more alive, this powerful practice might just be the missing piece in your wellness journey.
